What is GEO and AEO?
And How is it different from SEO?

Search on Google is changing. For years, businesses focused primarily on SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, to improve rankings in Google’s traditional organic results. Today, customers are also getting answers from Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, voice assistants, and generative AI platforms. That shift has led to two newer terms: AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, and GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization.

At Fischer Builds, we view SEO, AEO, and GEO as connected parts of the same visibility strategy. SEO creates the foundation. AEO makes information easier to identify as a direct answer. GEO focuses on making a business and its content useful, credible, and relevant enough to be referenced in generative AI responses.

What Is SEO?

SEO is the process of improving a website so search engines can crawl, understand, index, and rank its pages for relevant searches. Traditional SEO includes keyword research, on-page optimization, internal linking, technical SEO, content development, local SEO, backlinks, and authority building.

The objective is not simply to “use keywords.” Effective SEO connects a page with the intent behind a search while giving Google strong signals about the page’s topic, quality, relevance, and credibility.

SEO remains the foundation for visibility in Google’s AI experiences. Google’s current guidance states that its generative AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. Google also considers optimization for AEO and GEO to remain part of SEO rather than an entirely separate replacement for it.

What Is AEO?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It focuses on structuring and writing content so a search engine or AI system can quickly identify a useful answer to a specific question.

For example, someone may search, “How long does SEO take to work?” A page optimized for AEO should provide a clear answer near the relevant heading, followed by supporting explanation, variables, examples, and expertise.

AEO-friendly content often includes:

    • Question-based headings that reflect real customer searches
    • Concise answers followed by deeper supporting information
    • Clear definitions of products, services, processes, and terminology
    • Logical headings and easy-to-follow page structure
    • Original examples, experience, and expert insight
    • Accurate business and service information

AEO is not about writing robotic one-sentence answers. The goal is to make information easy to understand while still providing enough depth to satisfy the user.

What Is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It describes optimization intended to improve visibility within AI-generated search experiences and conversational answers.

Instead of only asking, “Can this page rank in the top organic results?” GEO also asks, “Can an AI system confidently use, reference, or cite this information when building an answer?”

Generic content that repeats what hundreds of other websites already say offers little new value. Strong GEO content contributes something useful: first-hand experience, original explanations, local expertise, case studies, comparisons, statistics, clear service details, or a distinct professional perspective.

Google emphasizes unique, valuable, non-commodity, people-first content for generative AI search. It also states that businesses do not need special AI markup, an llms.txt file, or artificial “chunking” of pages to qualify for its generative search features.

How Are SEO, AEO, and GEO Different?

The easiest way to understand the difference is by looking at the primary goal of each strategy.

    • SEO helps a page get discovered, indexed, understood, and ranked.
    • AEO helps the content answer specific questions clearly.
    • GEO helps content become a useful source for generative AI responses.

These strategies overlap significantly. A technically weak page may struggle regardless of how well its answers are written. Likewise, a technically strong website filled with generic content may have limited value to users or AI systems.

This is why Fischer Builds approaches SEO/AEO/GEO as an integrated strategy rather than three isolated marketing services.

What Helps a Website Perform in AI and Organic Search?

Successful optimization starts with fundamentals. Pages need to be crawlable and indexable. Site architecture should make important content easy to find. Titles, headings, internal links, and service pages should clearly communicate what the business does and who it serves.

Content should also address the questions prospects actually ask. Important questions deserve direct answers, supported with experience, context, examples, and useful detail.

Structured data can support an overall SEO strategy and eligibility for certain search features, but Google says there is no special schema markup required for generative AI search. High-quality content and sound technical SEO remain more important than chasing supposed AI optimization shortcuts.

For local businesses, accurate Google Business Profile information, consistent business details, strong service-area content, reviews, and locally relevant expertise can strengthen overall search visibility. Google specifically recommends maintaining accurate business information as part of establishing a company’s presence across Search and Maps.

SEO Is Not Being Replaced, It Is Expanding

The rise of AI does not make SEO obsolete. It changes how search results are presented and how users interact with information.

Businesses now need content capable of performing in multiple environments: traditional organic listings, local results, AI-generated answers, and conversational search. That requires a broader strategy focused on technical accessibility, useful answers, expertise, authority, and original content.

At Fischer Builds, our goal is to help businesses build search visibility that works today while preparing for where search is headed next.
